Yeah something like that.
Well OK then defeated
Man is not made for defeat, a man can be destroyed but not defeated.
-- Hemingway, The Old Man and the Sea
I have a similar line stuck in my head
for a long time I could not remember where it was from, but eventually remembered – its from William Carlos Williams introduction to Howl).
Everyone in this life is defeated but a man, if he be a man, is not defeated.
What does this mean? That giving up is equivalent to losing your manhood, castration? I think I prefer the Fugs hippie take. We are all defeated and have to invent ways to live in that condition. (I think YMCYL speaks to this).
Ah found the real quote
“Everyone in this life is defeated but a man, if he be a man, is not defeated.”
