    • I'm a big Zorn fan. Caught some of his 65th birthday concert series in San Francisco in 2018, that was pretty special. Zorn's catalog is ridiculously huge, but three albums that I especially like:
      • Masada Live at Tonic 2001
      • Lucifer: Book of Angels Volume 10
    • Thoughts after 70th birthday bash in SF

      • John Zorn at 70 - GA Residency Pass:
      • Man that was a lot of Zorn. I went nuts and got the full residency pass, 15 concerts in 5 days. Every single performance was stellar, although I couldn't quite process it all, it was just too much at once.
      • Two standout performers for me: Brian Marsella (keyboards) and Julian Lage (guitar).
      • The sheer joy of these musicians at performing this stuff; the shared joy and admiration of Zorn and the players.
      • Zorn's music references magickal shit (and many other interesting and edgy topics and many of my own obsessions: Batalle, Deleuze, Borges, Blake) And of course Kabbalah and Jewish and Christian mysticism. I am dying to know more about how these thinkers enter into the music, but honestly even now I can't say. If there is an answer, it is in the music, and as I've only listened to a fraction of it and because I am not really a musician, I am never sure what the connections are, not sure if I am really getting the idea behind the sound.
        • That's not really a problem since I definitely get something from it – I'm astonished by the mental traces it leaves in my mind, even though I can't articulate the structure like an actual musician could.
        • I think it might be magickal in the most obvious sense; these performances are rituals, they call up energies that simply cannot be accessed in any other way. Perhaps all music does and this is just a bit more self-conscious about it.
    • Zorn on Art and Mystery

    • A statement on the liner notes for Incerto (which, because I am getting stupid these days, did not realize was a Taleb reference until it was explicitly pointed out). Very Weird Studies mysterianism.
      • Through experience I have come to the realization that being understood is overrated. Once you are "understood" you are, in a sense, already dead. Mystery is at the heart of all great works of Art – and in the magical throes of the creative process one often finds oneself proceeding by intuition, by instinct – feeling one's way – thereby creating works that one never thought possible, and perhaps that even you do not fully understand. It doesn't really matter whether the audience likes or understands this kind of work, because the sublime has a life all its own, an integrity all its own. It defines its own form and fulfills its own purpose. And its very existence (whether society understands it or not, appreciate sit or not, wants it or not, loves it or not) can change the firmament of the universe.
