Ryle (1949) introduced the contrast between “knowing how” and “knowing that” with knowledge-how thought of as an ability to do something. In psychology, the terms “explicit knowledge” and “implicit knowledge” are commonly used for propositional and procedural knowledge, respectively; explicit refers to conscious knowledge and implicit to unconscious knowledge
