The grand-daddy of spiteware is the entire Gnu project. Not to recap that whole history, but Stallman was very hurt by the fact that most of his peers had gone off to a commercial company (Symbolics) and left him behind. The whole Free Software Movement and GNU project stemmed from that hurt.
I just want to say, that while I find Richard Stallman pretty personally intolerable (back in the old days at MIT I'd regularly have to get in-between him and women he was trying to "charm"), he's probably had a bigger impact on technology than anybody else I can think of. His politics are kind of liberatarian, but he hacked the very nature of property, and has done more to alter capitalism than most leftists.
This revelation hit me a few years ago when I bought a new Sony flatscreen TV and the first thing to flutter out of the box was a sheet that included a copy of the GPL and a list of all the free software packages that were incorporated into the product. Something like this. Stallman's unwashed thumbprint is everywhere.
